Mad Mission

Mad Mission is the Patty Griffin mailing list. It's a wonderful place to find info on Patty and to talk to other fans. To subscribe, send an email to mad-mission-request@smoe.org and have only the word subscribe in the BODY of the email. Do NOT send a sig file if you have one. If you HAVE to, then please type the word end on a line below the word subscribe, and then send that. It does not matter what you have in the SUBJECT of your email. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an email from confirm@smoe.org, which will contain a key/code that you have to send BACK to confirm@smoe.org. This code appears in both the body and the subject of the email you'll receive. All you have to do is send this key/code back to confirm@smoe.org in either the body and/or the subject of the email to confirm@smoe.org and you are in. You will then receive an email entitled "Welcome To Mad-Mission" which will tell you what to do to partake in this mailing list.

There is also a digest version. The only thing different about the subscription procedure is that the address to send the subscription request is mad-mission-digest-request@smoe.org

There's a news-only version of the list too. Much less email, no chatter/discussion, just news about Patty. To subscribe, do the same thing you do above, except the address to email the initial request to is mad-mission-news-request@smoe.org

If you have any questions, please email Mike Connell at DuckSoup@QuackQuack.net

FAQ

by Rachel Martin

Q: What exactly is Mad Mission?
A: It's a couple of things- 1) A Patty song, and 2) the Patty Griffin mailing list.

Q: Is this the mailing list found on Patty's A&M site?
A: Nope. You can sign up for that one, but since it never sends out anything it's useless.

Q: Is this the mailing list on PattyGriffin.com?
A: Nope. You won't ever get any mail from that one either.

Q: So what is this list?
A: The Mad Mission list was formed on New Year's Day of 1998. It's a group of people that write to each other through one central email address. Instead of writing to one private person, you write a letter to the entire list and everyone gets it in their mailbox.

Q: Are there any other versions of the list?
A: Yep. The regular loose mail list has discussions about Patty, plus pretty much anything else they want to talk about. If you only want to hear news about Patty, you can join the News Only list. If you don't want to get a bunch of separate emails, you can subscribe to a digest version that will send you one or two big emails every day of everything that was written to the list.

Q: What's the advantage of joining this list?
A: Well, you don't get paid anything. BUT you DO get to become friends with a ton of other Patty lovers, and since Mike is in direct contact with patty's management, you hear all the inside scoop about her and her upcoming performances.

Q: OK.... but who is Mike?
A: Mike is the list "owner." He runs all the technical aspects of the list through smoe.org, which hosts a ton of other lists.

Q: Why do people on the list seem to talk about Jewel often?
A: The Patty list is kind of the red-headed stepchild of the Jewel list. Patty opened for Jewel at a concert Jewel did in 1996 for her mailing list members. Many Jewel list-members and fans also became Patty fans, and eventually a new list was made just for Patty fans. Many members of the Patty list are also on the Jewel list.

Q: Is Patty actually on the list too? Will she write to me? Can I become pen pals with her?
A: Heh... no no and no. She claims to not even have a computer. But recently the guys in her band joined the list, so you may get some contact with them. Plus, Patty says she has friends and relatives that are on the list and let her know what's going on with us.

Q: Does joining the list cost anything?
A: Nope, it's 100% free... for us anyway. The person who runs the place that puts out the mailing list (Jeff) has to pay a lot of money for servers, upkeep, software, hardware, etc. You should be thankful.

Q: How do I join Mad Mission?
A: To subscribe, send an email to mad-mission-request@smoe.org and have only the word subscribe in the BODY of the email.

Q: How do I join the news-only list?
A: Do the same as above, but instead write to mad-mission-news-request@smoe.org

Q: How do I join the digest?
A: Again, the same as above, but this time write to mad-mission-digest-request@smoe.org

Q: Once I'm on the list, how do I write to it?
A: Address your letter to mad-mission@smoe.org, and send it on its way.

Q: How will I know what letters come from the Mad Mission list?
A: Any letter you recieve from the list will have MM: as the FIRST thing in the subject.

Q: Can I write to the list about something that's not really Patty related?
A: Sure. Since the people on the list sometimes become close, you can expect a bit of conversation on the loose-mail version. But PLEASE, if you write a post that has no Patty content, include "NPC" somewhere in your subject line so people can weed it out.
